Biobased energy/electricity and biobased chemicals go hand in hand: For our biobased chemicals business, we recover the hemicellulose, which leaves the remaining lignocellulose for conversion into energy products, such as electricity, steam or ethanol. We are currently developing biomass to electricity projects in South Africa and in the United States of America. In the USA we're using waste wood as feedstock and in South Africa we selected corn cobs (and sugar cane trash. The Chimera development is specifically aimed at harnessing energy from cane trash and our wood and corn cobs (see Cobelec) based projects are designed for future integration with a biorefinery.
